Veterans Day Program

Posted Oct 19, 2007 | Category: News

This information was originally posted on October 19, 2007. Please note that the article refers to events from a previous school year.

Hauser will be honoring all veterans who have served our country at the annual Veterans Day assembly on Wednesday, November 7, at 1:30, in the Hauser Auditorium. (Please note that this is a different day than was printed in the calendar.)

Students are asked to invite veterans or anyone who served in the armed forces to attend our program. We want to honor our veterans and armed forces personnel at the program. Students will introduce their veteran and the veteran will say one or two sentences about their military service. The program is more meaningful when we have veterans and armed forces personnel present.

New for this year, we will give the veterans an opportunity to speak to our students in Social Studies classes from 12:50 - 1:20. Students will prepare questions for the veteran. If a veteran would like to speak to a class, please mark that on the form. All veterans and guests are invited to a reception following the program in the LRC.

Mrs. Gill will be making a “Honoring Those Who Served” display case. If you have pictures, or small items (such as hats, medals, pins) that can be put in the display case, please give them to Mrs. Gill by Tuesday, October 30. Please label the items with the veteran’s name and the student’s name.

Please e-mail the following information to Mrs. Gill by Friday, November 2:

Student’s name
Veteran’s name
Relationship to student
Brief military history (where, when served)
Whether the veteran is willing to speak to students from 12:50 to 1:20

A printed copy of a form with this information can also be returned to Mrs. Gill’s mailbox in the office.

Next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings (October 16, 17, and 18) the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) will be administered to all Hauser students. The CogAT appraises cognitive development of students in three domains: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal. These tests are an important part of the assessment program in District 96. A revised daily schedule will be in place at Hauser for all three testing dates. Make-up tests will be given during the week following regular testing.

Parents can support student success during testing in the following ways:

· Encourage attendance and prompt arrival at school each day of testing.
· Enforce an appropriate bedtime to ensure a full night’s sleep.
· Provide a healthy breakfast on the mornings of testing.
· Remind your child to ask the teacher questions during test administration if directions are not clear.
· Provide encouragement by communicating confidence in your child’s ability.

Hauser faculty and staff will do all they can to make this a positive testing experience, and your support will help your child perform his/her best.

Red Ribbon Week October 22-26

Posted Oct 10, 2007 | Category: News

This information was originally posted on . Please note that the article refers to events from a previous school year.

Hauser will take part in Red Ribbon Week from October 22 through October 26. Red Ribbon Week is a national anti-drug and anti-violence week. Thousands of schools across the nation participate in activities promoting a drug-free and violence-free lifestyle. Hauser has been actively involved for many years.

Some of the plans for the week include:

On Sunday night, over 60 eighth graders will come to Hauser to decorate the school. They will put up the drug-free posters that SMART Club members have made. The students will put red and white balloons and ribbons all around the school. The entire cafeteria will be a sea of red.
On Monday, students from Hauser, Gross, Komarek, and RB will walk to the drug-free billboard that the 4 schools have sponsored. It is located at 9021 Ogden Avenue in Brookfield. We will have fire trucks and a police escort for the 2.2 mile walk. At the billboard over 150 students will hold an anti-drug and anti-violence rally. A speaker will address the students about the advantages of a life free from alcohol, tobacco, and violence.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, some of the eighth grade students who are in SMART Club will visit the elementary schools in the district. The students will talk to the younger children about how to make safe, healthy, and correct decisions in life.
On Thursday, a professional speaker, Eddie Slowikowski, will talk with Hauser students at 1:00. Mr. Slowikowski will present a program at 7:00 p.m. for parents.
On Friday, we will announce the winners of the poster contest.
On Saturday, over 175 SMART Club students will go to Fright Fest at Great America. Each student had to sell red ribbons and make a drug-free poster to earn the trip to Great America.

“Theme” days during the week include:

Tuesday, October 23 “Wear Red Day”

Wednesday, October 24 “Turn Your Back On Drugs Day” (students wear their shirts backwards)

Thursday, October 25 “Don’t Slip Into Drugs Day” (students may wear slippers at school)

The entire week is a lot of fun and sends a very powerful message about Hauser’s commitment to a drug-free and violence-free world.
